Travelers are looking for authentic experiences and are prepared to pay big money for them, delegates at the ABTA Travel Convention (6-8 October 2008) were told. Martin Lomax, the business development director at Gold Medal Travel, said nearly 50 per cent of people agreed with the following statement about luxury holidays: "These holidays are all about the experience." Speaking in a breakout session entitled 'Selling Luxury', he added: "Luxury is now about authenticity and the enhanced experience and you must differentiate your product."

The world’s 3.2 billion mobile phones could be transformed into 'indispensable' air travel tools within five years, new research shows. Mobiles used as personal travel folders have the potential to hold boarding passes, baggage tracking information and payment data, making travel truly paperless and location independent. There is also the future possibility that they can be used to store visa and biometric information, according to specialist IT provider SITA. For the air transport industry this opens the door to a new way of doing business as mobile phones are currently used by 90% of airline passengers.

In the coming years content will be key to branding, survival and growth online travel sites.
Consumers in the travel sector are becoming more brand loyal and less likely to use the internet to find new travel sites, according to latest stats from internet monitoring company Hitwise. The company saw inventory owners such as airlines, hotel companies and map providers receive 77% of the share of the top 300 search terms sending visitors to travel websites.
